CISCUP

A Legacy of Unity, Culture, and Competition Since 2000

What began in 2000 as a simple gathering of Somali youth has grown into the largest Somali soccer event in North America. Over the years, CISCUP has evolved from friendly games to a multi-continent tournament and, in 2019, became a foundation dedicated to youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and community-building.

A concrete help for a better

The CISCUP Foundation was born out of a simple yet powerful idea: to create a space where Somali youth and the community could come together, reconnect, and celebrate their shared identity. Over 25 years ago, a group of young Somali teenagers started the CISCUP Tournament as a way to bring themselves and their peers together once a year. With life in America often pulling people in different directions—living in different parts of the city, different states, and caught up in busy routines—CISCUP became an annual tradition, a much-needed event where friends, family, and community members could reunite, socialize, and strengthen their bonds.

What started as a soccer tournament quickly evolved into something much greater—a community movement. While the games remain at the heart of the event, the number of attendees who come simply to socialize, reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and celebrate Somali culture now far exceeds the number of those who play. It has become a gathering that bridges generations, offering a sense of belonging, cultural pride, and a reminder that even in a fast-paced world, community and connection remain vital.

From Tournament to Foundation

Five years ago, CISCUP Tournament officially became the CISCUP Foundation, expanding beyond just an annual event into a year-round initiative focused on empowering Somali youth. While we continue to hold the CISCUP Tournament, which now includes:

  • 16 youth adult teams,
  • 8 preteen teams, and
  • 8 teams of retired players from the globe,

CISCUP Foundation now goes beyond soccer, offering mentorship programs, leadership training, educational support, and community-building activities throughout the year. Many of the same youth who founded the tournament over two decades ago have now transitioned from players to directors and leaders of the foundation, ensuring that the mission they started continues to grow and impact future generations.

Many players who once participated in CISCUP have gone on to become international coaches, professional athletes in Major League Soccer (MLS), and university-level players around the world. Their success is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the lasting impact of creating opportunities for young people.

Our mission is to provide positive alternatives for youth, ensuring they stay engaged, connected, and away from negative influences such as drugs and social isolation. Through sports, culture, and community-driven initiatives, we create safe spaces where youth can thrive, develop leadership skills, and integrate successfully into society while staying rooted in their Somali heritage.

At its core, CISCUP is no longer just an event—it is a foundation, a movement, and a lasting legacy for the next generation.
